The Movat's Pentachrome stain of an atherosclerotic common carotid shows that a large lumen can mask complex inflammatorylesions. Inset A1 shows a well developed core surrounded by macrophages stained brown with the macrophage marker HAM 56 (arrows). Inset A2 is a high power view of the same lesion stained with the antibody to CD45RO and shows activated T cells on the lumen surface (short arrows). Inset B shows macrophages (brown) clustered on the lumen surface (short arrow) and throughout the neointima (short arrow) indicating plaque activity and progression.
